Latest Trend: “The Man Cave” Evolves

Gardner/Fox Wins Historic Preservation AwardIt used to be that Dad would toss some chewed-up old couch next to the furnace, watch football on a 16-inch TV with a wire hanger for an antenna, and refresh his beer from an old frig that had to be cinched shut. Those musty lairs of yesterday, however, have been replaced by “man spaces” more fit for a king than a caveman: home theaters, media rooms, wine cellars, bars, gyms, and high-tech workshops are must-haves for today’s males.

Men are creating their own in-home havens whether it’s a den with a wet bar, pool table and a jukebox or a home theatre with a super-sized television, leather recliners and a parquet floor. They’re even taking their creativity out to the garage and creating spaces that the Discovery Channel master mechanics would envy: tricked-out garages with painted walls, seamless epoxy floors, custom lighting, diamond plate storage cabinets and commercial grade car and motorcycle lifts.

Men are marking their own territory, and it’s no longer so . . . cave-like. Could the cavemen be evolving?
