Groundhog Day Ice Breaker

2 Feb

Apparently Punxsutawney Phil did not cast a shadow today so spring could be coming sooner than expected. In the meantime, we’re still coping with the aftermath of the recent Snowmaggedon. Ice dams in particular wreak havoc in this type of weather as snow on the roof begins to melt and form icicles. The icicles block the melting snow from dripping off the roof and water backs up underneath shingles onto insulation and into the house.

Prevention (such as proper air sealing, insulation, and attic venting) is of course the best cure, but for a quick fix fill a leg of pantyhose with a calcium chloride ice melter and lay it onto the roof so it crosses the ice dam and overhangs the gutter. The calcium chloride will eventually melt through the snow and ice and create a channel for water to flow down into the gutters or off the roof. Resist the temptation to use rock salt; it will stain the roof and siding!

If ice dams do occur and your roof starts leaking, take appropriate action to minimize the damage. We’d be happy to help with repairs so give us a call. And hope Phil’s right!
