Philadelphia Modernist Home Wins National Award

29 May

Living Room Renovation Modernest Home Philadelphia
Continuing to set new standards of professionalism, 81 remodeling companies from across the United States were named winners at the eighteenth annual Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The winning projects were selected from 420 entries. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.

The scope of the renovation included updates throughout the entire home (including the replacement of 111 windows and 14 doors) along with adding a new glass-walled breezeway and two-car garage. The renovation plan maintained the integrity of the original design but also addressed the homeowners’ request for 21st century spaces such as a playroom, exercise room and nanny suite.

“To win an award in this highly competitive category is quite an achievement,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.

The Chrysalis Awards program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in sixteen general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to any professional remodeler and design professional in the United States.

Pictures of the 2012 award-winning projects can be seen on Chrysalis website beginning in late June.

Before & After: Formal Powder Room Renovation

Before & After: Formal Powder Room in Wayne, PA
South Wayne, PA – The powder room in a historic home was remodeled as part of a larger whole house renovation. Thoughtful reconfiguration of interior spaces and circulation gave the powder room a larger footprint suitable for a formal hall bath. The existing 1st-floor powder room was cramped and poorly situated. The new generously spaced powder room comfortably accommodates guests and complements the formal spaces at the front of the original house that is serves.

Before & After: Historic Colonial Family Room Renovation

Family Room Renovation in Wayne, PAPrivate Residence in Wayne, PA – The existing 1-story 1990’s low-pitch sunroom addition wrapped around the original rear gable structure. The inefficient layout of the addition severely limited the use of the space. The exterior façade was completely reconfigured and interior and exterior circulation improved. The reconfigured space, now the family room with a new wood-burning fireplace, is the heart of daily family activity.

After – The previously completely open floor plan has been reconfigured to house the the large new family room, new kitchen, and the new breakfast/dining area. The new family room offers 180-degree views of the property, oriented primarily to the south. Windows are maximized in the southeast and southwest corners, while an opaque wall-space due-south helps separate the room into two gathering spaces. The reconfigured floor plan functions wonderfully for a 21st century family of four.

Before & After: Tudor Addition

1 Aug

Before: This Jenkintown home was begging for a little TLC. The windows that weren’t broken were drafty and inefficient, the roof had patches, and the stucco was peeling right off the chimney.

After: The existing gable was extended to accommodate a 2-story addition with a kitchen on the lower level and a master suite above. All the windows were replaced and a new roof installed. We also repaired the stucco and replaced the Tudor half-timbering.
